College recalls Queen's visit and "years of dedicated service"

Monday 12 September 2022

Elizabeth College - which has a special relationship with the monarch dating back more than 450 years - has been marking the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

"Students have marked the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen and will continue to show the respect of the whole College community during the official period of mourning," said the College on Friday.

"Students have reflected on her life, achievements and sad passing during tutor time and at year group assemblies with time for respectful reflection and compassionate dialogue."

The Union flag was lowered to half-mast on the College's main building in The Grange immediately following the announcement of the Monarch's death, pictured top.

Three Elizabeth College students and a member of staff were part of the team which rang bells at the Town Church for an hour from 12:00 on Friday.

Elizabeth College was established by Royal Charter in 1563. It was re-chartered in 1824.

The College's Statutes, sanctioned by an Order in Council in 1852, can be amended only by the monarch on the advice of the Privy Council - a process known as Royal Sanction.

Queen Elizabeth II visited the College in 1957, pictured top, when she was aged 31 and a little over five years into her reign. The College has posted photographs of this visit on its website.

Eight years earlier, while making the first of her six visits to Guernsey, the then Princess Elizabeth inspected the College's Combined Cadet Force at the White Rock.
