Vale's Union flag trouble

Friday 09 September 2022

Parish officials in the Vale were unable to lower their Union flag to half-mast last night as the island entered a period of mourning.

They arrived at their douzaine building at Maraitaine Road to find their Union flag on the grass. They retrieved the flag but were unable to return it to its mast.

They issued an apology at just after 20:00 yesterday after being thwarted in their efforts to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Junior Constable Bill Cohu told Express this morning that he was unaware how the flag ended up on the ground.

It is possible that a passer-by was trying to be helpful by lowering the flag and losing control of it or that the wind blew it from its mast.

Mr Cohu said it was not possible to raise the flag this morning because the flagpole needed to be laid across the car park, which was in use.

He hoped the flag would be secured at half-mast this afternoon.
