Sapling destruction "beggars belief"

Thursday 28 May 2020

St Sampson's Constables have reported damage to Guernsey Police after young trees at Delancey Park were cut down for the third time in as many years.

The incident was reported by St Sampson's Senior Constable Paul Le Pelley on Tuesday morning.

It's thought the saplings were damaged over the bank holiday weekend.

It is the third time trees at Delancey Park have been cut down in recent years.

The previous couple of times it happened were during 2018.

The first incident that year saw a young man jailed for a number of offences, which included damaging those trees deliberately.

Speaking about this act of vandalism, Deputy Le Pelley said:

"It is a great shame that people cannot find other things to do."

"We need to have our open green spaces with great vistas and views in order to give us all breathing space, and it just beggars belief that someone would do this."

There is another active case that is yet to go through the judicial system.

Some of the trees had originally been planted by Saffery Champness as part of its 40th anniversary in Guernsey, while the Velo Club, which regularly uses Delancey Park for races also planted some of the new saplings.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the vandalism should contact Guernsey Police on 725111 quoting reference number 021494.
