"Ferocious" Take That fans expected at the Mallard

Monday 12 June 2023

The Mallard Cinema is preparing for an influx of "ferocious" fans as the Take That film comes to Guernsey later this week.

With an army of fans - known globally as 'Thatters' - the band continues to be a big draw more than 30 years after they were formed in Manchester.

Most recently the band - now a three-piece comprising of Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, and Howard Donald - performed for King Charles III at his Coronation Concert. They're due to perform at The Hyde Park summer time gig in London next month and they're doing a charity performance for WarChild too.

The Mallard Cinema's General Manager said he has experienced first hand how the fans react to a Take That screening and he is expecting 'Greatest Days' to be popular in Guernsey.

"The number of requests we have had for ‘Greatest Days’ (The Take That film) made it very clear that this was a film that we had to get in," said Daniel Phillips-Smith.

"We have had Take That concert screenings before, and if sales for that are anything to go by, this film should perform very well indeed! The ferocious excitement of Guernsey’s Take That fans has been known to terrify our staff behind the counter!"

When Take That split at the height of their boy-band success in the mid-90s helplines were set up for devastated fans to call for support.

They then reformed a decade later for a reunion tour - with fourth member Jason Orange. The band have since released a run of singles and albums and have toured multiple times, including with fifth member Robbie Williams.

Mr Phillips-Smith said Take That are far from the only band to find success in films based around their music.

He said such films prove very popular, with the Elton John and Queen films among those that people have enjoyed watching.

"We have found that all the recent musical films based on musicians and groups are some of the busiest releases that we get," he said.

"‘A Star is Born’, ‘Rocketman’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Whitney Houston: I wanna Dance with Somebody’ and of course, ‘Mamma Mia: Here we Go again’ are films that we will always remember not only for their fantastic ticket sales, but the enthusiasm and excitement of the audiences attending, who are clearly die hard fans of the artists each film is based on.

"A faithful, emotional tribute to a singer or band can hold its own compared to any Marvel or Disney release!"
