New lounge bar planned for town

Thursday 02 May 2024

Planning permission has been given to convert an office into a new lounge bar, as part of the redevelopment of the former Fat Rascal restaurant.

The popular eatery closed earlier this year after seven years in business.

At the time, owner Steve Hopkins said he was shutting Fat Rascal to pave the way for "a new and exciting chapter to begin".

Those plans have now moved a step closer to fruition with a change of use granted for the space above Fat Rascal which was an office.

When Fat Rascal closed, Mr Hopkins was quoted elsewhere as saying he planned to replace it with a 'small plate dining room' with a craft beer bar upstairs.

The planning application described the proposed new licensed premises as being an aperitif and lounge bar.

The permission has been granted with conditions including that guests shall only be allowed to use the lounge bar between 17:30 and 23:30 between Tuesday and Saturday, and that it shall not open on Sundays, Mondays, or Public Holidays.

To prevent any noise disturbance for people who live near the proposed new bar - which is described as "close to residential property" - the external doors and windows will need to stay shut between 21:00 and 23:30 whenever music is playing.

The Planning Officer who considered the application said that Lefebvre Street "appears as an enclosed square with a variety of uses in the buildings lining the square".

It is an area designated within the Main Centre, and St Peter Port's Conservation Area and it is also deemed an Archaeological Area.

While there are 15 offices in the area, the one above the former Fat Rascal restaurant had been empty for more than a year when the change of use was applied for.

There is also another bar and eatery directly next door.
