Our Bailiwick shares in Jersey's grief

Monday 12 December 2022

After two tragedies and the loss of many lives, officials in Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark have all offered support and prayers to the people of Jersey.

Three fishermen lost their lives in a collision with a freight ferry on Thursday.

An explosion on Saturday morning has killed "around 12 people" with a recovery operation ongoing to determine the exact number of fatalities.

Deputy Peter Ferbrache, the President of Guernsey's Policy & Resources committee said the weekend's blast was a devastating event.

"On behalf of islanders I want to say how deeply sorry we are for all those affected by the devastating explosion in Jersey.

"We have contacted colleagues in Jersey to offer our support. We are here to help in any practical way we can. Our thoughts are also with all the emergency services responding to this tragic incident."

His thoughts were echoed by the President of Alderney's States, William Tate.

"No words can adequately describe the profound sense of shock and sadness felt by the people of Alderney upon hearing of the tragedy unfolding on your Island," he said in a message to the Chief Minister of Jersey.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those affected by this terrible explosion. Having already suffered the loss of members of your community this week at sea, we can only imagine the scale of the hurt felt by our Island cousins. Please accept our deepest condolences at this most painful time."

Herm Island - without any political representatives - shared a message on behalf of its own community.

A joint message of condolence and a call to prayer was shared by Guernsey's church leaders ahead of their Sunday services yesterday.

It was signed by The Very Reverend Tim Barker; Dean of Guernsey, Major Andrew Diaper-Clausen; Salvation Army, The Reverend Dr Eric Gaudion; Elim Churches in Guernsey, Pastor John Ogier; Spurgeon Baptist Church, The Reverend Canon Christopher Rutledge; Catholic Dean of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, The Reverend Howard Stringer; Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and The Reverend Justin Taylor; St Andrew in the Grange Church of Scotland.

Together they said: "We share the great concern already expressed by many for the people of Jersey, as they begin to come to terms with this tragedy, just days after the loss of three fishermen in an accident off the west coast of Jersey."

They encouraged people to pray for the people of Jersey, and especially for those immediately affected by these tragedies, for Jersey Police, for Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, and for specialist teams from the UK supporting them.

Prayers were also extended to the staff of the Government of Jersey and Andium Homes, those who are helping those who have been displaced, the churches of Jersey as they minister to their community, and the local media as they report on the developing news.

The Reverend Ecumencial Minister for Sark, David Stolten also offered prayers and condolences, tweeting: "Prayers are with all affected in the second tragedy to strike Jersey in a couple of days".
