Guernsey sunk by second-half comeback in Star Trophy

Wednesday 24 April 2024

Jersey produced a spirited second-half comeback as they beat Guernsey for their sixth consecutive Star Trophy win.

In what was a scrappy game in blustery conditions at St Peter, Jersey started the better of the sides but were unable to break the deadlock.

On the stroke of half-time, Guernsey took the lead when Aston Young brilliantly volleyed home on the turn after uncertain defending by Jersey from a set piece.

The home side equalised two minutes after the restart, albeit with a stroke of luck. Gabriel Madeiros battled his way into the box before delivering a ball which Jake Martin took a swing at, but, unfortunately for the young Guernsey defender, the ball spun into his own net.

Moments later the hosts were further ahead. Riley Brennan’s free kick hit the wall and looped up in the air. Madeiros was the first to react but his shot was saved by Regan Penney, the ball dropped into Archie Drummond’s path and he made no mistakes from close range.

The visitors pushed for a late equaliser and almost found one through Dylan Graham, who saw a shot hit the post with near enough the last kick of the game.
