A minute's silence at 20:00

Sunday 18 September 2022

A one-minute silence is being observed across the Bailiwick tonight, as the islands join in a national 'moment of reflection' ahead of the Queen's State Funeral tomorrow.

The silence is being observed at 20:00 across the United Kingdom, and there are calls for people across the Bailiwick to fall silent at the same time.

It will come the evening before the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

She is currently lying-in-state at Westminster Hall, ahead of tomorrow's services at Westminster Abbey and St George's Chapel in Windsor.

Her coffin will be interred in the Royal Vault alongsider her "strength and stay", her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died in April last year aged 99.

Her Majesty's father, King George VI, her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and her sister Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, are also at rest in the Royal Vault.

The one-minute silence is being observed to allow a "national moment of reflection to mourn and reflect on the life and legacy of Her Majesty".

Her 70-year reign is the longest in British History and only the second longest in history.

Flowers can continue to be laid for the Queen at the Sunken Garden in St Peter Port and at the Island Hall in Alderney and at the War Memorial at the church in Sark.

Books of Condolence are at various places across the Bailiwick.
