MSG appoints new anaesthetist

Tuesday 27 September 2022

Dr Kate Cheesman has joined Guernsey's Medical Specialist Group as a consultant anaesthetist in a new role targeting the number of surgeries on the waiting list.

With 12 anaesthetists now available, the number of operating sessions available will be increased, with the MSG saying this will improve access to theatre sessions for emergency patients during the day as well as pre-booked surgeries.

Dr Cheesman joins from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust in London where she was a consultant anaesthetist for eleven years, a college tutor, providing educational and pastoral support for anaesthetic students, and the lead for obstetric anaesthesia.

She specialised in anaesthesia for high-risk obstetrics, reconstructive plastic surgery and ENT (ear, nose and throat surgery). Her career has also taken her to in Australia, New Zealand and to Canada where she undertook an anaesthesia research fellowship at British Columbia Womens Hospital in Vancouver.

Dr Cheesman said of her new role: "For many patients the anaesthetic can be the scariest part of the procedure, I love building rapport with my patients and believe if you go off to sleep smiling you wake up smiling. It’s very rewarding to see a patient in recovery after the operation, happy and comfortable."

Dr Richard Evans, Chair of the Anaesthesia Directorate, said: 'We are delighted to welcome Kate to the Anaesthetic Department at the MSG. Her experience and skills with add considerably to the quality and delivery of Anaesthetic and ICU care on island."
