Deputy interested in Health committee vacancy

Wednesday 20 March 2024

A deputy has expressed his interest in filling the seat left open on Health & Social Care following the resignation of its Vice-President.

Deputy Tina Bury has stepped down, and now Deputy Gavin St Pier is vying for the opening with little over a year left before the next election and committee refreshes.

“I’ve emailed colleagues on the Committee to advise of my interest in the vacancy,” he wrote on social media.

“I’ve tried hard to provide scrutiny from outside in the last three years, so I’d love the chance to help from the inside.

“Some will say it’s time for me to put up or shut up.”

Deputy St Pier added he was “sorry but not hugely surprised” that Deputy Bury decided to step down from the Committee.

“I can sense the personal conflict she has experienced with being unable to secure the changes and progress she sees as necessary."

Deputy St Pier went through the first half of this political term without an official committee role, until the States elected him to the States Assembly & Constitution Committee at the end of 2023. He was later elected to the role of Vice-President.

He has courted controversy with the medical establishment in recent years after naming a local consultant in a States debate while using parliamentary privilege.

An investigation cleared any abuse of said privilege, but a code of conduct complaint was upheld against him with a reprimand recommended. However, Deputy St Pier has appealed that conclusion but it’s still yet to be heard pending a decision of the States over who should hear the case.
