Eight medals for Team Guernsey's archers

Friday 14 July 2023

Guernsey's archery team won four silver and four bronze medals across four days of competition at the 2023 NatWest International Island Games.

Four of the medals were team awards and four were won by individuals.

Lisa Gray won silver in the Single WA 1440 Women's Recurve while she was beaten to the bronze medal in the Recurve head to head knockouts by team mate Chantelle Bearder. Bearder defeated Gray by 6 - 4 in the bronze medal match.

Zoe Gray won two bronze medals in the Compound head to head knockout and the Single WA 1440 Compound.

Team Guernsey won silver in both the Mixed Compound and Recurve head to head knockouts and silver in the Single WA 1440 Recurve team. There was also a bronze in the Single WA 1440 Compound team.

Lisa Gray said winning both the individual and the team medals was a great feeling.

"I'm absolutely over the moon. I mean, to get a medal in a home Games is just amazing. I know for none of us, it wasn't the gold, but we fought so hard to just get what we've got and we were absolutely thrilled, it's just amazing."

Zoe Gray said she was also really pleased with the entire team's performance.

"I'm really really pleased with the team, we did really, really well and generally just individually as well. Like Lisa said, it's a really hard battle and there's some really high women's compound that came over, a couple of GB archers, so for me I'm just from an island and I shoot just for the fun of it, and because I enjoy it. It's really good that I can actually shoot against someone of that level. A few of my scores beat her and stuff like that, so it is really nice and it is such an achievement.

"You forget it's bronze. It's third, but it's actually still a real massive achievement when you think there's 85 archers that were shooting this week and out of everybody we did really, really well."

All of the archery medals were awarded in a ceremony held at the 'chill on the park' outside at Beau Sejour on Thursday afternoon.

This ensured all of the medallists were there. The chants of 'green army' were matched by chants of 'blue army' and songs being sung by other islands.

"It's really it's really nice, to have our medal ceremony now. It's a really nice recognition for what we've done," said Zoe Gray.
