Track & Field season gets underway with a youthful flavour

Thursday 18 April 2024

Nearly 80 athletes will be competing on the track and in the field at Footes Lane tonight.

Guernsey Athletics development officer Tom Druce said that the “Guernsey 2023 effect” appears to be in evidence with a shift in emphasis towards younger athletes, with a bumper entry in the 11-14 year age group.

Some of Guernsey's established stars will also have an early season hit out during the first Aztec Track & Field Series meeting, which marks the start of the qualifying window for Orkney 2025.

Abi Galpin will race in the 100m just after 18:30, before returning for a full lap of the 400m track at 19:30.

In both events she faces male Caesarean opposition in Jersey's decathlon star Evan Campbell.

One of Guernsey's all-time greats Dale Garland also lines up in the intriguing 400m battle.

Arguably Guernsey's brightest young prospect Darcey Hodgson goes over-distance from her favoured 800m in a mixed 1500m race which contains some interesting clashes, though Island Games steeplechaser Jack Le Tissier looks a hot favourite.

In the field, Holly Drake is the standout name in the triple jump with Stevie Marley up against Campbell in the shot putt.
