Jersey impresses with bows, Guernsey scoop four medals

Tuesday 11 July 2023

Faroe has dominated the early archery competitions, but there are reasons to celebrate the exploits of Channel Islanders down at Rovers so far.

The World Archery 1440 rounds ended yesterday afternoon. Men need to fire three dozen arrows from four different distances, getting progressively close, to score a maximum of 1,440 points from 144 arrows total.

On the other hand, ladies fire the same number of arrows but from slightly closer distances in the first two rounds.

Guernsey now has two silvers and two bronzes after two days of action down Rovers holding fourth place in the medal table.

Jersey sits second in the table with two golds and two bronzes.

Men’s single gold went to the Faroes’s Hans Petur Højgaard with 1,202 points racked up from the four distances. He also hit 29 golds.

Silver went to Bermudan Bernard Wade III for hitting just 9 points fewer, and Aland’s Daniele Rolfi hit 1,172 for the bronze.

Rebekka Gannholm from Gotland took gold in the women’s, with a consistent number of points from each distance. Guernsey’s Lisa Gray claimed silver with 1,145 pipping Jersey’s Mollie Perrett by four points.

Faroe took gold in the team competition, with Guernsey and Jersey also on the podium with 3,361, 3,24, and 3,193 points apiece.

Compound

There were similarly three medals available in the multi-stringed games.

Faroe again came out on top in the men’s through Jóannes Poulsen’s score of 1,339 including 72 golds. Orkney's Stewart Stanger fell short by nine points, with Manx’s Rhys Moore just down another five.

Previous champion Lucy O’Sullivan from Jersey, who has competed with Team GB, snapped up gold again in the woman's final with a respectable gap between silver-winner Aalin George from the Isle of Man. Guernsey’s Zoe Gray comfortably took bronze with 1,257 points.

Those efforts helped Jersey to take the team gold on 3,954. Isle of Man came second, and Guernsey grabbed another bronze with 3,838 points.

A medal ceremony for these competitions will take place at Beau Sejour on Thursday. Action continues at Rovers all week.
