Child among Alderney's increasing Covid cases

A positive case of Covid-19 has been identified in a child who attends St Anne’s School in Alderney.

As a result, about 30 children who were at school on Wednesday and Thursday last week have been identified as contacts. These children are in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

In total, there are now 23 known positive cases of the coronavirus in Alderney and the island is effectively in a mini-lockdown. Social distancing is strongly recommended, people are urged to wear face coverings in public places, while only end-of-life visits to care homes and the hospital are being considered.

Public Health is contacting the families of the children identified as direct contacts. A series of measures have been put in place, including stay-at-home guidance and mouth swabs every other day until 13 days from their last contact with the child who tested positive.

Other household members can attend their workplace unless they are a case or contact in isolation.

Affected households will be allowed to bubble with one other household (e.g. other families, double-vaccinated grandparents) for support with childcare. However, they need to consider the risk of this if any members of that group are considered vulnerable.

Separately, Public Health is asking anyone who was at Alderney Airport on Monday 12 July between 08:45 - 15:00 to come forward for testing. This was a day when the airport was fogged in.

They are asked to contact the welcome centre in Alderney on 01481 520266 to book in for a test, along with anyone who was at any of these venues or establishments during the given times:

  • The Blonde Hedgehog on Friday 9 July between 08:00 - 16:00

  • Concert at St Anne’s Church on Saturday 10 July starting at 19:00

  • The Seafarers Service on Sunday 11 July starting at 10:30

  • Cantina No 6 on Sunday 11 July between 16:00 - 20:00

  • The Divers Pub on Sunday 11 July from 20:00 onwards (they were showing the Euros 2020 Final)

  • Alderney Sailing Club on Thursday 15 July from 18:30 onwards
