Unemployment down again

Thursday 14 April 2022

The number of people unemployed in Guernsey has fallen below 300 for the first time since 2018.

The latest figures - which show the picture in the last week of March - reveal that there were 295 claimants of unemployment benefit who had not worked that week. That was 12 fewer than at the end of February.

The number of people unemployed peaked at just over 1,600 during the island's first covid-19 lockdown in 2020 and reached 1,000 during the second lockdown in 2021.

Unemployment has fallen in more or less every month since then and is now approaching the modern low of 250, which was achieved in the summer of 2017.

However, new claims for employment- and income-related benefits increased, with 59 new claims made compared to 24 in the previous month.

The number of people who were in work and claiming additional financial support at the end of March was 325.

The number of job adverts promoted by the States' Job Centre, pictured top right, was 498, a reduction of 67 from the previous month.

There were 40 people on training schemes and work placements run through the Job Centre, such as Work to Benefit and Kickstart.
