Unemployment and benefit claims up

Thursday 27 October 2022

The number of people asking for financial support has risen with an increase in new claims for benefits as well as small rise in unemployment.

The latest figures from the States show a "snapshot taken at the start of October 2022" reflecting the situation during September.

Unemployment

The total number of people classed as unemployed in Guernsey stood at 242 at the end of September 2022. That was an increase of three from the previous month.

The various training schemes and placements run through the Job Centre, which aim to support people into employment, were attended by 45 people during September. This included schemes such as Work to Benefit, Kickstart and placements within the third sector.

Previously, August had seen the island record its lowest unemployment levels since 2008. Just 239 people were actively seeking work at the end of the summer.

At the end of August there were 46 people on the training schemes listed above, showing a static number of people engaged with the courses.

Benefit claims

The number of people who were in work and claiming additional financial support increased by seven from 286 to 293 during September.

The number of new claims for employment and income-related benefits also increased, with 27 new claims made, compared with 22 in the previous month.

This compares to a drop in the number of new claims for employment and income-related benefits over the summer months, with the 22 new claims made during August, down from 35 in July.

Job availability

The Job Centre promoted 299 jobs in September.

This was down from 467 jobs listed in August.

Many industries continue to claim a need for additional staff with the States listing 132 roles across its many sectors.
