Timely test of student's knowledge with return of de Putron Challenge

Sunday 26 February 2023

Students' knowledge will be tested in a timely fashion with the return of the de Putron Challenge.

The biggest school quiz in the Channel Islands brings together year six and year eight pupils from Guernsey and Jersey schools to test their skills.

This year’s competition’s theme is 'It’s Time'.

This will be reflected throughout each of the rounds, for example, the maths round will include times tables questions and clock calculations, the environment round will focus on how we are running out of time, the “in recent times” round will be on current affairs, the history round will take the students back in time and the “time and space” round will quiz the students on their science and geography knowledge.

Hayley de Putron, a Trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said that it had developed so much over the years.

“Five teams took part in the first event and this year there are 52 teams across both islands. It’s fantastic that it has become a main event in the schools’ calendars. The competition helps build students’ confidence, expand their skills and highlights how clever our young Channel Islanders are, all while having fun supporting their school.”

John Fernandez, political reporter from BBC Guernsey, will return as quizmaster in Guernsey and Charlie McArdle, TV news and radio presenter from BBC Jersey, will take on the role in the Jersey challenge.

Along with general knowledge questions and maths challenges, there will also be a creative STEM round, which has been developed in partnership with the Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers, to get the students working as a team to solve a technical puzzle, as well as video and picture rounds.

Spectators can attend.

The Guernsey de Putron Challenge is being held at Beau Sejour on Wednesday 8 March starting with the Year 6 challenge from 09:15 to 11:50. The Year 8 challenge will take place from 14:00 until 16:15.

The Jersey de Putron Challenge is being held at the Jersey Royal Showground on Tuesday 14 March starting with the Year 6 challenge from 09:30 to 12:35. The Year 8 challenge will take place from 14:30 to 17:45.

The Inter-Island final will take place in Guernsey on the 23 March. The event will also be live streamed.
