"Thank you for your patience"

Wednesday 07 December 2022

Some mistakes have been made in the issuing of 2023 tax coding notices, which are being sent out via post to all tax payers now.

Some people have already received theirs and the States Revenue Service has admitted that some of those contain mistakes.

A spokesperson said those mistakes mainly concern personal allowances, where "in a few cases it has been identified that the customer was not allocated a personal allowance, generally where the allowance was transferred to their spouse in their 2022 coding notice."

The spokesperson said these are being corrected either when staff notice them, or when the customer points them out.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused customers," they said.

2023 coding notices have been generated based on allowances used in the 2022 coding notices. If your allowance depends on personal circumstances, including claiming an increased allowance for the 'charge of child allowance' then customers need to notify the revenue service each year.

The spokesperson said that staff are working through the allocation of 2023 coding notices as quickly as they can while thanking customers for their patience.

The full statement from the Revenue Service spokesperson can be read below:

"In line with previous years, the 2023 coding notices are generated based on the allowances customers had in their 2022 coding notice. This is because the 2022 coding notice will be more up-to-date than the latest return submitted which is likely to be for 2021. Where allowances depend on personal circumstance, for example the charge of child allowance, then customers need to advise that they continue to meet the criteria to claim that allowance, for their 2023 coding to be updated. This is not a new approach.

"In a few cases it has been identified that the customer was not allocated a personal allowance, generally where the allowance was transferred to their spouse in their 2022 coding notice. These are being corrected either when the customer makes contact, or as identified by the service. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused customers.

"The service are working through contacts from customers on their 2023 coding as quickly as possible, and we thank customers for their patience."
