Solstice celebrations planned

Friday 19 June 2020

Different celebrations are planned to mark the summer solstice with the sun due to rise over the Bailiwick at 05:03 tomorrow morning before setting nearly 17 hours later.

Saturday 20 June is the longest day of this year - giving us eight hours and seven minutes more daylight than the winter solstice which will be in December.

While the sun will rise over St Peter Port at 05:03 tomorrow morning, it will set in town at 21:20 according to official meteorological data, giving the longest day of the year.

The earliest sunrise we will experience this year was on 16 June while the latest sunset will be on 25 June, but the day itself will start to shorten slightly from today.

Among any private events to mark the summer solstice which is seen as a spiritual occasion for many, will be the chance to view the sunset on June 20 and the sunrise on June 21 at Stonehenge.

Usually people gather at the English Heritage sight to experience the solstice by watching the sun rise or set through the prehistoric monument.

As covid-19 lockdown restrictions remain in force in England, the public gathering has been cancelled and will instead be replaced by a live streamed event which can be watched HERE

Locally a group of people from the Friends of the Vale Common's Council group will be meeting for a picnic on top of Rocque Balan to watch the sun set on Saturday 20 June.

A spokesperson said: "tradition has it that local people have celebrated the festival of Beltane on the Eve of St Jean (midsummer's eve)".

Elsewhere, a group of year-round sea swimmers will be meeting at La Vallette at 04:45 on Saturday morning to swim at the bathing pools during sunrise.

They will then meet at Cobo at 21:00 to swim again during the sunset.
