POLL: Yes or no - should the island explore renewable energy options

Wednesday 19 October 2022

Following the release of a detailed reported exploring opportunities for utilising renewable energy resources, the next steps are yet to be decided.

Deputy Carl Meerveld yesterday outlined why he, and 14 other deputies, have spent time discussing and researching different ways of producing power using the tidal, solar and wind energy around us.

Three reports were realised - two shorter documents looking at the possibilities of using solar or tidal power, and a much more detailed, lengthier report looking at wind energy.

Deputy Meerveld said Guernsey should capitalise on wind energy by installing turbines on the horizon to the south or west of the island.

He said this could raise hundreds of millions pounds in revenue for Guernsey, while not costing us anything, if it is tackled correctly.

Since publishing his report he has said he is willing to stake his personal political reputation on the topic and that he wants to see progress on this within the next couple of years.

He acknowledges that some pushback may be experienced from other States members, and members of the public, so one thing he wants to do early on in the process is establish public support for exploring options - not the detailed plans but just whether or not there should be exploratory work to establish if there is a public desire to look into renewable energy opportunities.

Express now offers the opportunity to have your say - whether YES or NO you do or don't support that exploratory work.
