Henry VIII checks in for GSPCA care

The GSPCA can now claim the 150th year since the charity was launched is a record breaker in another way with an eighth seal pup now residing in its dedicated unit receiving medical care and attention.

Henry was rescued from near the Lighthouse at Castle Cornet after a caller to the animal shelter had spotted the "very poorly grey seal pup".

GSPCA Animal Ambulance Driver Sarah Harrison collected him and brought him back to the animal shelter in St Andrews where he is now being looked after along with the seven other seal pups already in the charity's care.

The charity had been called out to rescue an eighth seal pup last week but it sadly died before it could be taken to the shelter having been spotted at Jerbourg in a perilous condition.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said Henry is also very poorly, but will hopefully recuperate well.

“The pup was extremely thin at only 18kgs so less than half the body weight Henry should have been for the age of around a month old," he said.

“Henny has a long road to recovery but has been doing well.

The other five pups rescued during this season are called Shakespeare, Emilia, Echo, Hector and Cleopatra and Mr Byrne said they all "continue to do well and improve daily" while two seal pups still receiving care having been rescued last year will be released very soon - they're called Luna C and Aurora.

Mr Byrne said having seven seal pups in their care equalled their previous busiest spell so with eight they are now feeling pushed with the feed bill growing daily as each pup grows stronger and starts to eat more.

“With eight seal pups we are going through many fish each day," he said, adding "...there are many ways to support their care from donating online to supporting GSPCA Purple Month as we celebrate 150 years helping seals and other animals in Guernsey.”
