Harold Hobbs now in service for the RNLI

Friday 22 March 2024

Guernsey’s new inshore lifeboat has arrived in the island and has entered service to respond to any emergencies at sea.

The Atlantic 85 class vessel was named after Mr Harold Hobbs who was killed in June 1940 while serving for the RNLI out at sea, shot by German aircraft fire at the outset of the Occupation.

His story was told in a recent BBC documentary into the work of lifeboat crews around Britain.

His great nephew, Jason Hobbs – the current volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager at the St Peter Port RNLI – has a long family tradition with lifeboats.

He said: “It is a very proud day for us all here at St Peter Port RNLI, to see the Harold Hobbs officially on service, ready to respond and assist anyone in difficulty around the waters of the Bailiwick”.

The boat, constructed in the Isle of Wight, arrived in the island on 20 March and was launched into the harbour the following day.
