Goat herd lost to sudden illness

Tuesday 05 January 2021

The future of a local business has been left uncertain after an illness led to the loss of its entire herd of animals.

Sue De Carteret, owner of Guernsey Golden Soap, was 'heart broken' by the death of the goats, whose produce were used to make soaps and shampoo.

"At present we do not know what the future holds," she said.

"We are continuing as normal for the moment, as at this time of year we are not milking, and have enough frozen milk to see us through what would have been kidding in the spring."

It is currently unclear how the goats became ill; autopsy results and samples have been sent to the Animal and Plant Health Agency in the UK for a specialist opinion.

Once those results come through, the company will make a decision as to whether or not to bring in a new herd - but Mrs De Carteret isn't sure yet if she would be willing to do so.

"At the moment my heart is not in it. They were great personalities, such loveable and friendly goats," she said.

"They will be greatly missed, not just by us, they had many friends and followers. We have been overwhelmed by the response to our very sad news, and thank everyone for their messages of condolence and kind wishes."
