Fathers Day fun for milk runners

Sunday 16 June 2019

Hundreds of elite athletes and fun runners are taking on the challenge of the Guernsey Dairy Milk Run this year.

As tradition dictates, it's being held on Father's Day with a number of dads and grandads among the 800 runners.

Organised by Guernsey Athletics Club and the Guernsey Dairy, the entry numbers have had to be capped again this year for safety reasons as more and more people take to running each year in the island.

Among the elite athletes expected to lead the pack today will be locally based Ryan Burling, who since moving to Guernsey a few years ago has made his mark as a runner to watch, if you're quick enough to catch sight of him.

Burling ran the 2018 Fathers Day Half Marathon in 1:07:51 with Peter Amy in second place in 1:14:13. Andrew Van Kints came third in 1:15:06. The first woman across the line in 2018 was Ulrike Maische who came 21st overall in a time of 1:25:13.

The runners will all set off from L'eree, from the start line at the Shingle Bank, at 09:00, heading along the west coast, following the road around the north coast before crossing the Bridge and heading into town. The finish line will be on the Crown Pier this year.

While no road closures are in place, there will be traffic management at some areas including the start and finish lines and around the Weighbridge roundabout. Marshalls will be in place at road junctions to guide runners across safely.
