Expanded post office heads St Peter’s development wish list

Resident-led ideas to overhaul St Peter’s have now been published for public comment and scrutiny.

A document for the parish exploring the future residential, recreation and economic opportunities for the next two decades was prepared by residents over three-years, the first exercise of its kind in Guernsey.

A document for the parish exploring the future residential, recreation and economic opportunities for the next two decades was prepared by residents over three-years, the first exercise of its kind in Guernsey.

It includes supported proposals for retail, such as the enlargement of the Post Office with a new retail unit or cafe, conversion of a redundant toilet block, and a community hedge veg stall.

Residents wanted to see more pedestrian links in the community, particularly around Rue dew Brehauts, as well as speed limit restrictions on back streets.

Most supported landscaping around the warm memorial to allow for a public assembly or market space, while a bolstered health hub around the doctor's surgery, community allotments at Styx, and an upgraded sports pavilion.

On housing the plan simply refers to existing rules for homeowners within local centres to extend, sub-divide or redevelop their existing properties to offer additional living space or units.

The Development & Planning Authority is now assessing the suggestions, which could help to guide development in a community-centred way going forward.

These can be provided via email or writing by 28 May, and if they show broad support without clear objections to the suggestions of parishioners the idea will be absorbed into official planning guidance for the area.

Deputy Victoria Oliver, President of the DPA, said: “I am so pleased that we have had our first community plan and look forward to your views.

“As a Committee, we haven’t had input into this plan; this has been drafted by the local community in St Peter’s for the local community in St Peter’s. If you live in the area, use the area regularly, or are just interested in this part of the island, please look at the plan and let us know if you have any comments.”

You can submit your views at planning@gov.gg or in writing to the Development & Planning Authority, Sir Charles Frossard House, La Charroterie, GY1 1FH.
