Work on glamping site to start with in'tent' this month

Following planning approval in February, building work to create a new glamping site in St Peters is due to start this month.

Those involved in the project have had a few months to recover following a "stressful" planning application process and will be starting the actual construction work this month, aiming to open for the end of the tourist season 2019.

The site owner, Danny Barnes said: "We have spent the last few months regrouping and sorting out the last few things with planning so there is nothing to see on site at the moment. We aim to start construction this month, so from September it will be all guns blazing with the project."

Concerns had been raised by some people living in the vicinity but Mr Barnes said that since the application had been approved he had received mainly positive responses: "I have had nothing but positive comments in relation to the site, from both locals and potential tourists and also had interest from relevant magazines about doing a feature. We are woking on the site but it has been in an embryonic stage until this month."

With the work starting in earnest now Mr Barnes is keen to ensure he is creating something special and is attending the Glamping Show in Warwickshire this week. He said: "I will be going to the Glamping Show on Thursday and Friday, it is important to stay fresh with everything and look what equipment is available for our site from suppliers in the industry."

After checking suppliers they will start getting items in and work will begin. Mr Barnes said: "Construction will start this month and we certainly hope to be in operation for the end of the tourist season next year, in July or August. It is a big project, but we are optimistic."

Mr Barnes was keen to point out that even if the site was finished early it would be unlikely they would open as such sites need to look natural as part of their characteristic: "Once the construction work has finished we won't open straight away as we need the site to grow over and naturalise."

The site will be catering for tourists and locals who want a bit of luxury in a fabulous location: "There will be a maximum of 10 units on the site, six semi permanent ones on the top and four temporary accommodations on the bottom. They will be luxurious tents with wooden platforms, en-suite and soft furnishings with driftwood interiors. In addition we will have a swimming pool. The site is in one of the nicest locations, looking straight over Rocquainne and with only a small number even when fully booked it will be quiet and exclusive. Hopefully our guests will take advantage of quiet walks and easy access to the bay," said Mr Barnes.
