PODCAST: Popular quiz returns

Friday 04 February 2022

The annual De Putron quiz is returning as a live, in-person competition, after two years of delays and virtual events.

It was launched in 2007 to promote the importance of education and give students the opportunity to prove themselves in an intellectually competitive event.

“It was set up because there was a lot of school competitions for sport but there weren’t that many educational competitions,” said one of the organisers, Megan Thoume.

Ms Thoume works for Orchard, the PR agency responsible for promoting the Ana Leaf Foundation. The Foundation is a charity that promotes and supports educational initiatives.

The event pits teams of students from years six and eight against each other from both Guernsey and Jersey schools. The finalists then compete in an inter-island event.

At the moment, 42 schools have put forward teams for this year’s event.

“It is tough, there are some hard questions in there, but that’s all part of the challenge and all part of proving that it’s cool to be clever,” said Ms Thoume.

The event is usually held in November but, due to a spike in covid cases last year, the 2021 event has been re-scheduled to March 2022.

Additionally, the event in 2020 was completely virtual - so this year’s event is a return to form.

“There’s a lot of planning and work that goes into this, but when you see all the students and their friends and their banners and cheering it’s a great atmosphere. It all comes together well and it's really exciting," said Ms Thoume.

This year’s event starts on 9 March with Guernsey students competing at St. James.

You can find out more about the event through our podcast, where we interviewed Ms Thoume about the quiz.
