Cycle success is 'One of a Kind'

Guernsey DJ Andre De Carteret has completed a gruelling 24 hour fundraising cycling challenge having cycled through the night and finished at 10:00.

Also known as DJ Oneofakind, Mr De Carteret has swapped his turntables for a bike this summer as he embarks on the Tour de Sez, fundraising for the charity in honour of Sarah Groves included this 24 hour cycling challenge, which started at 10:00 yesterday.

Mr De Carteret embarked on a training plan last year when he first signed up for the third cycling challenge in memory of Sarah Groves, who was murdered five years ago while staying on a houseboat in Kashmir.

Up to one hundred cyclists and support staff will set off from Guernsey for Amsterdam in September, with each individual training while also fundraising for the Sarah Groves Foundation.

The charity is very important to Mr De Carteret as he was a friend of Sarah Groves and was a DJ in the Town House where she ran the bar. He said: "It's very emotional and the real reason I am doing this is for Sarah, it is the longest day of the year but it is also her 30th birthday."

Mr De Carteret set off from Vista's at Vazon at 10:00 yesterday, with the intention of cycling as many miles as possible in 24 hours before finishing at the Liberation Monument in St Peter Port at 10:00 on today.

Express caught up with Mr De Carteret along the West coast seven hours into his cycle where he had already completed 91 miles. He said he was extremely grateful and humble for all the support he had received:

A number of people joined the cycle in stages with Mr De Carteret and he was very grateful of the support. At around 02:00 he posted a picture of some rice pudding breakfast and stated that he was approaching the 200 mile mark.

When Gary Hooks, one of the organisers of the Tour De Sez, caught up with him at 08:00 he described his incredible achievement and the state of Mr De Carteret with just two hours to go: "The state of play after some 21.5 hours continuous cycling is ...... PAIN, the man is in the hurt box and he’s not coming out for at least another 2.5 hours , he won’t mind me saying this but it wasn’t pretty."

"This is really deep end stuff, those ultra endurance athletes will know exactly what I’m talking about when your riding the red line, every turn of the pedals evokes a thousand difficult thoughts, so do spare one for our man right now."
