Christmas fundraisers underway for Les Bourgs

Saturday 02 December 2023

Two initiatives aim to raise vital funds for Les Bourgs hospice over the next few weeks.

The 12 Bays of Christmas encourages people to swim in a dozen bays during December.

While the hospice has also opened a pop-up shop in Smith Street for the month.

The 12 Bays was inspired by an idea of the Marley and Sealey families who are all keen sea swimmers.

Each bay on the list has a festively-themed name like Bordeaux-ho-ho or Chestnuts Rousse-ing on an open fire.

Liz Stonebridge, Fundraising Administrator, said: “We know that Christmas is a busy time of year and it is all too easy to get caught up in thinking that we just don’t have enough time. All it takes is a quick dip to reap the benefits of cold water immersion, get recharged and have the feel good factor from doing your bit for charity.

“The event has been designed to be achievable by ticking swims off on weekends and bank holidays so by getting a group of friends or family together it becomes a great way of catching up with people too. This is your chance to give a little and make a big difference to everyone who we care for.

Each swimmer will receive a Christmas-themed map that has been illustrated by The Tiny Island Studio. Participants will also have an option to purchase a woollen bobble hat which will hopefully help people identify others who are taking part in the challenge but most importantly also reduce heat loss when in the sea.

Each participant will receive tips and information about how to stay safe during and after a cold-water swim and wearing a wetsuit will be optional.

The Hospice will be hosting a “12 Bays Day” at the Bathing Yules (Pools) on Saturday 2 December (10:00-14:30) when participants can drop-in for their swim and get a free hot drink (sponsored by Rocq Capital) and a mini mince pie (sponsored by Manor Farm Foods).

Registrations (£15 for adults, £5 for U18s) can be made through the Hospice website www.lesbourgshospice.org, or by signing up in person at the 12 Bays Day at the Bathing Pools.

For any queries about the event please email info@lesbourgs.com or ring Liz Stonebridge on 07781 122914.

Les Bourgs pop-up shop will be in the former Poundland unit in Smith Street.

It will be selling ladies and men's clothing, shoes, boots and bags from Saturday 2 December, 10:30 until 17:00.

It will also be open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10:30 until 16:30 and Thursday from 16:00 until 20:00.

Hospice Enterprises Manager Catherine Boughay said: “We are very excited about opening in Town. We have received a lot of messages from the public saying how pleased they are that we are coming to Town.

Due to the generosity of the Guernsey community we have so much clothing stock, so we have taken this opportunity for December only to bring some of this to Town at very short notice. We are so grateful to members of the community, other retailers, volunteers, families and friends who have all offered their help to turn this around.

“Our shop at Les Huriaux is extremely well supported and we certainly hope for the same in St Peter Port.

“The hospice needs to raise £1.75 million each year to meet our running costs, so all funds raised will go towards us being able to continue to deliver the high standard of service that we are known for, to those that need it most.
