“I hope we can end the year entering a period of calm but diligent work”

Monday 25 December 2023

Deputy Lyndon Trott is wishing the island a merry Christmas and positive new year, thanking all those who keep the Bailiwick running 365 days a year.

You can read the festive message from the island’s President of the Policy & Resources Committee below:

“Firstly, I’d like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and New Year. As 2023 comes to a close, it’s an extremely busy time in government. Islanders will be very aware it has been a turbulent few months politically, but I hope we can end the year entering a period of calm but diligent work and a renewed focus on making significant progress on some of the island’s key priorities in 2024.

“And I also hope we can give islanders real confidence about the future, because while we undoubtedly have big challenges, I am genuinely optimistic. Guernsey remains one of the best places in the world to live and work. We have seen good economic growth in the last two years, unemployment remains very low, and our financial services sector is a world leader providing tremendous career opportunities to islanders.

“But it isn’t all about the economy.

“Guernsey is also a safe, friendly, caring community where people look out for each other and that more than anything is what makes it a special place.

“I like many am looking forward to spending some time with family, and if I may, I’d like to take the opportunity to give special thanks to the people working in our health and care sectors.

“As those close to me will know my mother has dementia, and requires full-time care as a result, but that care has been exceptional and I’m incredibly grateful to the team that support her and to all those working in the sector who care for our friends and relatives, especially at this time of year, whether that is in a professional or personal capacity.

“I could similarly praise our teachers, both in the public and private sectors – I myself still have a child in primary education – our law enforcement officers, the people who keep our streets, parks and coastlines clean, the workers who ensure we have reliable utilities, our civil service and all those working in the private sector and third sector who each make a valuable contribution to our island.

“I hope you all enjoy a wonderful festive period and happy New Year.”
