Alderney runway set to reopen at lunchtime today

Thursday 27 October 2022

Guernsey Ports have announced that damage to Alderney’s runway has been temporarily repaired, with the airport set to reopen to commercial traffic by lunchtime.

Amco Giffen, who are Ports' pavement specialists, agreed with Alderney-based contractors to a short-term plan of works. They were approved by the aviation regulator yesterday, and work began in the afternoon.

Ports activated its contingency plan, which remains in place this morning. Ports staff are in the process of arranging alternative transport for those with urgent need using boat or helicopter whilst the runway is unavailable.

Amco will later send a team to the island to perform more extensive repairs as required.

Investigations had taken place as to whether Aurigny could use its Dornier aircraft on a reduced length of runway, but it was deemed not possible due to the location of the structural defect.

Amco Giffen is a UK-based provider of engineering, construction and maintenance services in the transport, energy and environmental sectors.
