The GSPCA are encouraging islanders to wear purple poppies alongside their traditional red poppies this November.

Purple poppies are being sold at the GSPCA and several other locations for a minimum donation of £1 with the proceeds helping animals in Guernsey.

The role of animals during warfare enhanced communication between the trench and headquarters and gave psychological comfort to men trapped in the trenches – even just for a short period.

“There have been many animals that both helped the troops and were rescued,” said manager of the GSPCA, Steve Byrne.

The poppies have been organised by Linda Laine and are handmade by Sally Johnson, Ruby Dodd, Sue Queripel, Christa Tee, Sue Haggarty and Odile Davy.

“We only have a small number of the purple poppies left on sale so please pop in soon to get yours,” said Mr Byrne.

The GSPCA opening hours are 09:00 – 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00 – 16:00 on Sunday.

“From all at the GSPCA, we will remember them," said Mr Byrne.
