Guernsey Trees for Life (GTFL) has had a bumper planting season this year, making a significant contribution to the planting ambitions of the Queen’s Green Canopy Jubilee celebrations.

The charity embraced the Queens Green Canopy initiative with lots of planting events, which started a year ago when GTFL planted an English Oak tree with former patron and outgoing Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Ian Corder to commemorate the life of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh on the Queen's Birthday in 2021.

This year the charity has been pleased to welcome its new patron, the newly appointed Lieutenant-Governor, Lt-Gen. Richard Cripwell to Guernsey and it is looking forward to working with him for the duration of his tenure in Guernsey.

A new relationship with corporate sponsor Channel Island Fuels has enabled the charity to access more funding on a long term basis, to support the charitable aims of planting and promoting the importance of trees.

This new sponsorship has facilitated the significant and important Green Canopy event, which is the Planting for Schools Project. Every school class has been gifted a tree and students have participated in planting these on school sites. There has been a high level of support from schools on island.

Colin Dodd, GTFL Committee says: “The Charity has been really pleased to have the support of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture in this Jubilee celebration project. We wanted to ensure that we could gift a tree for each class in Guernsey and we would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and students who worked with us to plant the trees during this ‘21/’22 planting season.

It has been a big project to coordinate, especially during the challenges of the COVID surge, but we managed it. Involving youngsters in what we do is a key aim of the charity in educating the next generation about the importance of trees to our environment.

Our tree planting schemes focus on planting a minimum of 500 native tree & hedge plants annually and thanks to funding from our principal sponsor, Channel Island Fuels Limited, we’ve been able to increase this rate of planting to over 3,000 tree & hedge plants this season. This has helped put Guernsey on the map of the Queens Green Canopy and considering our size, this is a really positive contribution, adding significantly to the repopulation of native species and enhancement of the biodiversity of selected areas in Guernsey.”

Anyone who is interested in assisting with future planting, new scheme suggestions or donations, is encouraged to contact GTFL either by email to gsytreesforlife@gmail.com or call 07781165298 for more information.
