Students from St Sampson's High School were the champions at this year's Robot Olympics, which was supported by First Central Group.

The event marked Women in Technology day and saw 16 students from St Sampson's and Ladies' College compete with EV3 Lego robots.

The Year Nine students had to code their robots in order to complete three different sporting events; lacrosse, shot put, dressage and, for the grand finale, a synchronised dance.

The session was designed by the Digital Greenhouse as part of the Digital Innovators Programme, which was devised with First Central as a way of developing opportunities for young people to engage with digital technologies.

The session aimed to encourage participants to use different skills including creative problem solving, engineering and coding.

"The Digital Innovators Programme has shown that there is a really high level of innovation and digital creativity on the island," said Head of Digital at the Digital Greenhouse, Lucy Kirby. "It's great to be able to work with companies, like First Central, to help young people build and develop these essential critical thinking, problem solving and collaborative skills for their futures."

Two representatives from First Central were on hand throughout the event to offer their technical expertise.

Quality Assurance Analyst from the company, Lisa Le Huray added: "I would have loved the opportunity to attend an event like this when I was a student. I always knew I wanted to work in technology, so this would have been a great initiative to take part in.

"It's inspiring to see that there are lots of bright young women who are interested in a digital career. It was incredible to see how quickly they all picked up coding the robots and I hope some of them decide on an exciting career in technology!"
