Leadership conference looks at 'horizon thinking'

Wednesday 10 April 2019

Guernsey-based consultancy Leaders is hosting its second leadership conference.

The event will take place on 20 June at St Pierre Park Hotel, where a line-up of speakers will present talks on a wide range of topics with a theme of 'horizon thinking'.

The speakers will aim to shine a light on leadership excellence and stimulate conversations around topical issues facing Channel Islands leaders.

Commandant of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst Major General Paul Nanson will join those speaking at the event. He was recently appointed as the General Officer Commanding of the newly fostered Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command and has held many roles within the army, including Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and Chairman of the Sandhurst Trust.

"I hope to bring each leadership story to life with examples from my own experience and with vignettes from military history," said Major General Nanson. "The purpose is to suggest lessons that might be applicable in a civilian context."

Lecturer in Environmental Engineering Dr Ellen Moon will speak about her career in science and her efforts to make science and engineering more accessible to young women. She said: "Diversity of thought and multidisciplinary learning is becoming increasingly important; it's too easy for all of us to become immersed in our own 'bubbles'. I'm excited that the conference includes a wide variety of speakers and guests. I'm looking forward not only to sharing my experiences but also learning from others."

Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE, DL, Chairman and Founder of Cobra Beer and Independent Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords will also be attending and will speak about what courageous leadership requires.

Finally, entrepreneurial couple Dame Mary and Douglas Perkins will be interviewed by Leaders founder Phil Eyre. The couple established Specsavers' joint venture partnership model in 1984 with the aim of making eye care more affordable.

Mr Eyre added: "I'm looking forward to exploring with Dame Mary and Douglas how their personal values have shaped their long-term vision and enabled them to navigate their business and personal challenges."

The conference has been sponsored by Grant Thornton, Northern Trust, Carey, Specsavers, Active Optimus and Investec (Channel Islands).

It will begin at 16:00 with time between each speaker for a round-table discussion. The evening will conclude with refreshments on the terrace along with a barbecue which speakers and delegates are invited to attend.
