Your chance to represent Guernsey running against other countries around the world

Tuesday 12 September 2023

Everyone is being encouraged to log their miles to help a Guernsey team in the Running World Cup.

Anyone over 13 can run for their own country for free.

Every participant who completes three kilometres in under 30 minutes on a smartphone or smart device contributes towards their country’s total.

Guernsey will be running as Channel Islands.

Already 200 countries are signed up - the distances logged are adjusted to take account of population and smartphone coverage.

Qualifiers lasting one week will take place from Monday 18 to Sunday 24 September.

Alun Williams, Be Active lead at the Health Improvement Commission and Guernsey athletics endurance coach is organising Guernsey’s involvement.

“Guernsey is great at this kind of event,” he said.

“We get lots of community engagement with initiatives and we are seeing more and more people enjoying the benefits of getting active.

“It is very easy to join up and we would encourage anyone who is keen on doing a bit of running in September and October to register.

The semi-finals and finals take place next month.

The team will be captained by 2023 Island Games gold medallist Rebecca Toll.

Toll started athletics at around age 6, doing all events including cross country.

As she got older she started to focus on high jump and 800m, before switching to 400m. Following a four year break from athletics,Toll returned in 2021 and achieved a bronze medal in the 400m and gold medals in the 4x400m relay and 4x100m relay.

“Rebecca is the ideal captain for the Guernsey Running world Cup team. She performed excellently in the Island Games 2023, and it was all down to the effort and determination that she put into her return to running,” said Williams.
