Guernsey FC inch their way to safety

Monday 15 April 2024

Guernsey FC withstood an aerial bombardment from visitors Binfield at Footes Lane as they played out a 3-3 draw.

It is a result that leaves the Green Lions still needing another win to guarantee safety in the Isthmian South Central, but with plenty of opportunities for that.

Binfield are fighting to secure their place in the league too, having turned things around in the second half of the season.

GFC were two goals up, with Matt Loaring’s lob opening the scoring on 13 minutes, his 16th goal of the season.

Three minutes later Ross Allen doubled the lead after a defensive error, and only a sharp save prevented the Green Lions just a couple of minutes after that.

Tyler D’Cruz got the visitor’s first on 30 minutes, a close range effort following a long-throw.

Another long-throw led to the equaliser. This time Guernsey’s Dave Merris miscued a back pass and lobbed Josh Assison in the Green Lions’ goal.

Both sides had their chances as the final 10 minutes of the half played out.

It was Binfiled who registered next.

D’Cruz again on target with a head from six yards with the game 57 minutes old.

GFC had the better of things from there and carved out the chances/

The equaliser came from the head of Sam Murray, who got on the end of a cross from Merris on the hour.

Southall visit on Wednesday, with the win likely to be enough for Guernsey FC depending on results elsewhere in the league.
