Ed Rocha was the lucky winner of a brand new Fiat 500 Hybrid in a fundraising raffle in aid of the Delancey Park Community Pumptrack Project.
“We’re thrilled to have won, totally surprised, and really happy to continue contributing to make the pumptrack dream become reality,” said Rocha.
The raffle raised just under £16,000 for the project with tickets being sold from just before Christmas right up until the draw on Easter Monday which took place at Sausmarez Park Café during the Guernsey Velo Club’s Easter Festival prize giving event.
Mark Smith, who is one of the coordinators of the project on behalf of the Guernsey Velo Club said: “The raffle was the start of our fund raising efforts to build what will be a valuable community facility in the heart of St Sampsons and to be able to raise so much money early on certainly gives us a great kickstart, it may seem strange for a cycling club to be giving away a car to fund a cycling facility, but it was all about maximising our fund raising opportunity.”
The car was supplied by Le Mont Saint Garage, who have been great supporters of the project.
Directors Michael and Peter Beausire were both at the handover of the keys.
“We love to be able to support the sporting community in Guernsey and being able to supply the car was the least we could do, and with our contacts we were able to upgrade the prize as well from what the club were expecting,” said Michael.
With a fundraising target of £250,000 there’s still a long way to go and there are more events and fundraising initiatives being planned.
“We hope to be able to start work with our specialist contractor in the Summer, and the build won’t actually take that long.
“As with any community project the hard part will be securing the funding, but this is a facility that will be open for all of the community to use so we appreciate all of the support we get,” said Alex Margison, GVC President.
