Guernsey Velo Club refreshes Easter Festival

Tuesday 26 March 2024

Four days of riding will test the legs at this year’s Guernsey Velo Club Easter Festival.

The festival is a staple on the club’s calendar and is also a chance for those who are not members to enjoy racing.

Competitors are divided into divisions to ensure healthy competition through the field.

"It's an action-packed weekend of racing," said Cycling Development Officer Paul De Garis.

The first stage is a criterium on Friday morning at Perelle for the main field, beginning at 07:00.

The juniors race at Delancey Park at 14:00.

Saturday sees the introduction of a night-time hill climb stage up the Val des Terres, which is taking place from 20:00.

Stage three on Sunday morning is a road race on the L'Eree circuit from 07:30 before the time trial finale on Monday from 07:00 on the Cobo 10TT course.

Managing the rigors of racing and recovery will be a rare test as much of the racing locally are normally one-off events.

The Val des Terres hill climb freshens things up from last year's festival agenda - when the club tackled it as part of the hill climb series in September it attracted record numbers.

"It should be a great spectator event," said De Garis.

The festival is named in memory of Club stalwart Paul Van Katwyk, who died in 2019.

The overall winner is decided on a "points per stage" basis.

This will be separate open and women's races, and prizes for the winners.

The Paul Van Katwyk Trophy will be awarded to the rider who has embodied the spirit of competitiveness, sportsmanship and good humour over the weekend.

Registration deadline for The Paul Van Katwyk Easter Festival of Cycling is 18:00 today [Tuesday 26 March].
