Not enough money in the States' pot for Women's’ World Cup final fan zone

Friday 18 August 2023

Jersey’s government funded “fan zone” for the women’s World Cup will not be replicated in Guernsey because finances are too tight.

The zone at Liberty Wharf in Jersey saw four 55-inch LED screens installed for England’s semi-final win against Australia and will be repeated for Sunday's final against Spain.

Businesses opened up their alfresco areas and the scheme looks likely to be seen again for other major events in the future.

Guernsey’s States has previously arranged for big screens for major events, like the King's Coronation in May.

"The Lionesses deserve all the praise they are receiving for their incredible achievement in reaching the final and we wish them the best of luck,” an Education, Sport & Culture spokesperson said.

“Following the summer of sport that we have experienced this year it would be wonderful to be able to provide big screens to view the final game for islanders.

“However, given the widely reported, significant pressures on public finances and a need for spending restraint across the States, there is no intention to provide big screens using public funds for this match.

“We are sure the private sector will provide excellent opportunities to watch the match, as they have with other international football competitions in the past.”

The Lioness' game against Sprint kicks off at 11:00 Sunday.
