Fresh plans have been submitted to bring the former White Hart pub back into commercial use after years of the site standing empty, with an unnamed retailer said to be waiting in the wings.
The prime site on the corner of the taxi rank has served no purpose since 2019 when the pub and Barbados nightclub in the basement called last orders for the final time.
The owners of Weighbridge House – Spread Trustee Company Limited – want to change the use of part of the ground floor and the basement from Public House to general retail.
It’s hoped internal fit out works could begin within two months, subject to planning approval.
There have been several attempts to repurpose the building, with a 2015 planning decision allowing the entire ground floor to be converted into one retail space.
There was then speculation that Morrisons would move into the space after the pub closed. In 2021 Sandpiper CI hoped to turn it into a convenience store but none of these schemes came to fruition.
Le Pollet Food Hall was previously located in the remainder of the ground floor space, but that has since closed and the space is now occupied by a private health firm.
The building has been advertised on Savills for some time, referred to as a “substantial and prominent corner position with window frontage on three sides”.
Any planning permissions previously granted have since expired.
