What does the future of tourism look like? ‘Only time will tell’

Wednesday 19 April 2023

A push for collaborative and inclusive work to develop a future tourism strategy has been welcomed by vital members of Guernsey’s industry, while others just want to make sure the momentum is maintained.

The newly created Tourism Management Board held its first industry workshop yesterday, intending to pull together feedback from those in the industry to help build the tourism strategy for the Committee for Economic Development.

Jane Barnes is the joint owner of the Camp de Reves glamping site: “It is encouraging to know that they want us to put our input into their suggestions – Ireally happy with that,” she said.

I thinkgenerally, everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet, that we want improved travel links and we want to all be coordinated. Everyone is happy to provide data and help out where they can. It’s great that everyone wants to be together and create a helpful platform.

The CEO of Herm was more reserved in his praise for the workshop, suggesting that ‘only time will tell’ if the Board manages to benefit the island and the industry.

“For the first time I’ve ever known there’s engagement, where the team want to understand and want to engage – so I thought that was very positive.

I think there’s a necessity and willingness for a fresh approach on this. For a few years it has not been working, Herm has never been engaged by Visit Guernsey. They have been creating concepts and projects that are just alien to what we need. I think this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Ultimately, Guernsey needs to get its act together and raise awareness across the UK. It’s like the UK’s best kept secret – let's not over complicate it, let's get the message out there, out into the UK. Lets all collect all these pennies and make them into pounds.

“Only time will tell.... I have also experienced that sometimes these initiatives can drift off into insignificance.”
