Walking volunteers needed

Sunday 06 November 2022

More volunteers are needed to keep Guernsey and Alderney's Wellbeing Walks Scheme going as more people sign up for the increasingly busy programmes.

The Wellbeing Walks Scheme sees people meet for 30 minute sessions to help them stay active.

Walk leaders are needed to co-ordinate regular short walks aimed at helping all kinds of people.

The 30 minute walks are held Monday to Friday in Guernsey and on Sundays in Alderney and are aimed at adults who want to become a little fitter in the company of others. The walks take place at a variety of venues and they always finish at a café so that walkers can have time to socialise with others over a drink.

Yvonne Le Page is the coordinator for the local scheme. She said it is a very popular programme.

“Our walks are very popular and so we need new volunteers to help us help others.

“Our walk leaders are a friendly bunch and provide all the advice and encouragement a new walker needs to build fitness at a pace that’s right for them. You don’t need to be extremely fit yourself to volunteer and we provide all the training you need for free. You’ll soon be making a real difference by supporting all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle. There is always a lot of laughter on our walks so get in touch to join in the fun! We ask that you volunteer for a minimum of once a month and attend a team meeting three times a year.”

The next training session is Thursday 17 November between 09:00 and 13:00. Mrs Le Page can be contacted via Public Health Services.
