Vauvert ranked 'Good'

Wednesday 03 July 2024

Another of Guernsey's schools has had a positive Ofsted inspection with Vauvert being ranked 'Good' in every category.

Good is the second highest grade Ofsted will award in each of the five categories it rates schools in.

The positive report for Vauvert follows similarly complimentary inspections recently at Hautes Capelles, St Mary and St Michael, Notre Dame, and Les Beaucamps as well as other schools.

Vauvert was praised by Ofsted's inspectors for being "a welcoming and inclusive place to be" while pupils are said to "achieve well" and children with additional needs are supported to learn "an ambitious curriculum".

The school's leaders are said to "skilfully work with external agencies to secure any additional support needed for these pupils" while reading is a top priority across the school.

Ofsted gives each school advice on areas to improve on too, and Vauvert is no exception.

The school needs to ensure that the curriculum is well planned and sequenced, so that pupils develop their understanding over time.

Vauvert was also told that the support provided for pupils with SEND lacks precision, meaning some pupils do not progress successfully and that the school needs to ensure the support provided for pupils is specific and well matched to their needs.

Vauvert was also told that the teaching of handwriting is not well established meaning some pupils are struggling with letter formation and legibility. This needs to be addressed with an agreed approach to the teaching of handwriting across the school.

Despite these negative comments, the report has been welcomed as mainly positive said Headteacher Adrian Paul.

"We are delighted with the outcome of this inspection which recognises so many of the good things that we do at Vauvert," he said.

"It was pleasing to see Ofsted recognise that we are an inclusive school with high expectations, that our curriculum is ambitious and that children achieve well. To achieve gradings of good in all areas is recognition of the hard work put in by the staff team and validates the work that we have been doing. We know that there is much still to do and concur with the areas identified by Ofsted for development.

"As headteacher, I am proud to lead our school and to work with the staff, the families, and the children to enable us to be the best that we can be."

Mr Paul's comments were echoed by Education officials with the Director of Education saying Vauvert has done well alongside other schools in the island.

"Vauvert is the latest primary school to achieve good in all five categories, which further establishes that our primary education system in Guernsey is delivering good results," said Nick Hynes.

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Adrian and his team on this achievement, which is very well deserved after all their hard work. This inspection report is something the whole school community should be proud of."

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport, and Culture also agreed saying that the Ofsted report is indicative of Vauvert's achievements.

"On behalf of the Committee I’d like to congratulate Adrian and the entire team at Vauvert, which includes staff, parents, carers and of course pupils too, and also thank them for their ongoing hard work.

"External inspections play an important role in benchmarking the achievements of a school and also identifying areas where further improvement can be made. This report clearly demonstrates the very positive work taking place at Vauvert, as is the case across many of our primary schools that have had similar inspection outcomes."
