Ofsted: Hautes Capelles rated ‘good’ in all categories

Wednesday 17 April 2024

Hautes Capelles Primary School has been judged ‘good’ in all categories by a recent Ofsted report.

The findings have been welcomed by the Headteacher of the school and the island’s Director of Education.

In its report Ofsted said the school’s offer “beyond the academic curriculum is highly impressive” citing a structure that helps pupils build on past experiences.

“They take on a wide variety of leadership roles, such as house captains, librarians and play leaders. This helps to give pupils a voice in the school.”

Schools are rated across five categories by Ofsted, including; The Quality of Education; Behaviour and Attitudes; Personal Development and Welfare; Leadership and Management; and Early Years provision.

Each category is rated either; inadequate, requires improvement, good, or excellent. Hautes Capelles scored ‘good’ in every category.

In a statement, the States of Guernsey said: “In the section of the report dedicated to areas the school could improve, inspectors identified that in some subjects assessment is not used effectively to check pupils understanding. Ofsted also said new subject leaders needed continuing support to embed change in their subjects.”

In response to the report, the following statements have been provided:

Sue Coughlin, Headteacher of Hautes Capelles, said: “I am delighted that the Ofsted team and inspection process recognised the individualised approach we take at Hautes Capelles. The report highlights that we know our children and families well to make their time with us academically sound and also rich with experiences.

“Achieving good in all categories is a significant 2 success which validates the hard work and dedication of the school team who have worked tirelessly on developing the curriculum and wider offer for the children. I am incredibly proud of our school and community and know that together we will continue to ensure the very best for each of our pupils.”

Nick Hynes, Director of Education, said: “This latest Ofsted inspection report demonstrates that our primary education system in Guernsey is delivering good results. We were already confident of this fact, but to have it confirmed by Ofsted is great news.

I’d like to congratulate Sue and her team on being the latest primary setting to receive good in all five categories of the framework. This is something they can be rightly proud of and hopefully parents will also share in that success.”

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said: “On behalf of the Committee I’d like to congratulate Sue and the entire team at Hautes Capelles, including the pupils, and also thank them for their ongoing hard work. Ofsted inspections are stressful but they are also important in benchmarking the achievements of a school or education setting and for identifying areas for improvement with the benefit of an outside point of view.

“We have previously emphasised that is a very challenging to achieve good or above ratings in all categories, something which staff have consistently articulated also, and this latest report clearly demonstrates the very positive work taking place at Hautes Capelles.”
