Three Guernsey athletes in CISPOTY top five

Monday 07 January 2019

Guernsey has three athletes in the running for the Channel Island Sports Personality of the Year Award 2018, for which the winner will be decided at the end of this month.

There are five Channel Island contenders this year, including Guernsey's Bowlers Lucy Beere and Alison Merrien, and Guernsey Boxer Bradley Watson.

Alongside them are Jersey athletes Michael Le Bourgeois, a boxer, and netball player Serena Guthrie.

The awards themselves will be taking place live in Jersey on the 31 January, after they were held this time last year at Beau Sejour. The programme is broadcast for people to watch and vote via telephone on who they believe should be the winner.

As the event's main sponsor, Betway's Anthony Werkman said: "It has once again been a fantastic year of sport for the islands, the nominations demonstrate the outstanding achievement by Channel Islands sports men and women throughout 2018.

"We are looking forward to an exciting evening of celebration and congratulate all those who have been shortlisted."

Lucy Beere won her first senior world championship in 2018, beating an Australian in the final on their home turf. This came after she got revenge on a New Zealand player, who knocked her out in the semi finals in 2017.

Meanwhile, Alison Merrien had a "big comeback" in 2018, after missing a year because of injury. She claimed her third WUBC women's singles championship, giving her a total of 10 world titles from through her career.

Bradley Watson also had a comeback, with his first win in three years. He claimed the English super flyweight title beating the previous undefeated Loua Nassa.

Of the two Jersey athletes, Mr Le Bourgeois was voted Player of the year in the Rugby Championship, and is currently the captain of the Bedford Blues, while Ms Guthrie took a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in netball, to top off an amazing year.

The evening's awards will also see a team of the year chosen, a rising star of the year, the judges award for achievement presented, the Michael Lucas Sporting Hero award given and a coach of the year decided.
