40,000 journeys were facilitated through the States’ ride hailing app in its first year of operation, averaging 106 journey per day.

E&I says 105 taxi drivers are signed up, with 85 regularly taking bookings through it.

Traffic & Highway Services, a department of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure, launched the service – called Guernsey Taxi App – following several months of work with the nascent Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association in response to a report that showed the taxi industry was in failing.

It has been hailed as improving customer experience and, along with reforms to liberalise entry for drivers, stopping a decline of available cars.

The apps busiest day came this April with 239 journeys completed.

Deputy Andy Cameron, member E&I, said the numbers were encouraging.

For customers it provides a one-stop shop for hailing a taxi on demand, avoiding the need to phone up several companies. For drivers it reduces the amount of ‘dead mileage’ by offering the request to the taxi closest to the waiting passenger,” he said.

We’re pleased that this has been welcomed by the industry and continue to work alongside the Guernsey Taxi Drivers Association, to see how the app can be further developed. It’s good for customers, it’s good for the industry, it’s what people expect in today’s world, and we’re really pleased with how it’s been received one year in.”

The app is provided by global firm Taxicaller.
