States of Alderney President to resign

Friday 12 April 2019

The President of the States of Alderney has announced his intention to resign from office in May.

Stuart Trought, a former merchant seaman, has served in the post for eight years.

He will formally announce his intention to resign at next week’s April States Meeting.

An election will then take place on Saturday 11 May to find a new President before Mr Trought officially resigns from office 15 May. The new President will then be sworn in, to ensure continuity.

Mr Trought was elected on 11 June 2011 to replace Sir Norman Browse, who retired half way through a four year term. Mr Trought then completed that term which ended on 31 December 2012. He was re-elected unopposed in 2016 to serve until 31 December 2020.

The next President will complete that term and there will then be new presidential elections.
