Guernsey's St John Cadets did themselves proud as they received the highest scores in both sets of pairs competitions at the first aid inter-insular against St John Ambulance Jersey this weekend. Sadly it's wasn't quite enough to win the overall title which went to Jersey. Guernsey’s Badgers also put in a fantastic performance to get second place in the junior section.
Four Cadets and two Badgers from each island took part in the annual St John competition, which tested their first aid skills in scenario based assessments and other exercises. The young people had to demonstrate CPR and other first aid techniques. One of the scenarios involved a patient having a stroke, while another was a trauma related injury caused by a sporting incident. For the main team assessment the Cadet were faced with a drowning scenario involving multiple casualties, one of whom was suffering hypothermia and another experiencing a panic attack. The Badgers were tested on their treatment of an arm injury and a nose bleed. They also had an exercise involving identifying bone in the human body.
One of the judges, Robin Gonard said: “Guernsey put in a very strong performance in the team scenario, which displayed a good level of first aid knowledge and a breadth of skills. They worked well as a team and coped very well under pressure.”
