John Atkins has been appointed to the role of ‘Head of Resilience and Education’ for St John Ambulance and Rescue Service - making him responsible for risk management, business continuity, and clinical education for the vital service.
Mr Atkins has a long history with Guernsey's ambulance having initially trained as a paramedic here.
He then went on to hold a number of training and leadership roles and was previously the Head of Operations and Acting Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer before he relocated to the UK.
Whilst away from the island, Mr Atkins was the Medical Services Manager and Lead Paramedic at Silverstone, where he also held the role of Tactical Medical Commander, which included the Formula One British Grand Prix.
He served on MotorSport UK’s national Medical Committee, as well as working with the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Now back on island, Mr Atkins has rejoined the organisation he originally joined at the age of 15.
“I am delighted to have re-joined Guernsey’s ambulance service and to be heading up emergency planning and education for the organisation," said Mr Atkins.
“My time away from the service – both locally at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and with the NHS and at Silverstone in the UK – has been hugely valuable and has broadened my perspectives and I return to my roots all the stronger for it.”
